ABSTRACT
The research work focused on the effects of cultism on students’ academic performance a case study of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic. The research work consists of five chapters. The chapter entitles chapter one an introduction and scope of study, chapter two covers the review of literature, which covers the various effects of cultism on students’ performance. Chapter three examines research methodology covering sampling procedures and method of data analysis. Chapter four, this cover the presentation of data analysis, chapter five hold on the summary, conclusion, questionnaires structured question asked during the oral interview and recommendations consequently, the research work was completed with references slighted during the research work.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODCUTION

• BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The concern of Nigerians over the issue of secret cult particularly in our higher institutions is a matter that calls for urgent attention. The current activities of cultists have been the topic of discussion in most dailies and other media houses all over the country.
Secret cults have been prevalent in our various communities. Thy have also been on the increase in our tertiary institutions and gradually spreading to our secondary schools. Various government at the state and federal levels, past and present have made series of attempts at checking and controlling their existence and activities especially in our institutions of higher learning. The decree 47 of 1989, which was promulgated to curb the menace of secret cult, has virtually become ineffective, because membership cuts across all walks of life within the country and even the law enforcement agencies.
Ironically, cult activities have been on increase in our various campuses even after the promulgation of the decree, their destructive activities had often disrupted the conducive environment necessary for productive academic work on our campuses.
Cult could be sociologically defined as a group having an ideology and ritual practices centered on secret symbol.
The activities are only known to its members and it is a grievous offense to divulge their secrets to non-members. Even the identities of the members are kept secret and only known to members only. That is the reason the world “secret cult” conjures fear because of the members dreadful acts.
Considering the havoc being perpetrated by the adherents of the secret cults, one may be scared from attempting any discussion, not to talk of conducting a research into their activities. This has made the issue of campus secret cults not obtuse but abstract, far removed from life of an ordinary man.
Certain reasons may account for why some students join societies. According to Francis (1999) “man seethe in the society comfort, relevance and protection”. In other acceptability and quest for usefulness, acceptability and protection from danger or problems that make join society. Therefore, the motives of students joining secret cult in educational institutions may not be different from the motive as defined by Francis (1999).....

• STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

In the recent time, the activities of secret cult members in the institution of higher learning in Nigeria have assumed a very dangerous dimension, that the society at large is no more comfortable when the word “cult” is heard or mentioned. Cult has made parents lose some of their dearly beloved children whom they struggled to get to the higher institutions and upon whom they have put hope of their tomorrow. Some students have been killed, some maimed and disfigured, others were brutalized gravely. Some had to abandon their studies in order to have their respite from their predators white many students live in fear and perpetually in nightmarish condition, all because of cult activities by supposedly co-students in the higher institution.
It is a common thing to read in the newspaper and magazines how students use guns, axes, dagger and other dangerous weapons to wound, main or even to kill other innocent students.
Terminating the future and hope of most of our innocent youths through cultism would be a cause for concern. The problem has even gone beyond the polytechnic to secondary schools as well as to the primary school level.
The problem of this study is therefore to examine the effect of cultism on the attainment of academic performance of students in our tertiary institutions.

• OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

1. The study is aimed at investigating the effect of cultism on the attainment of academic performance of students in tertiary institutions.
2. To proffer solutions and ways for curbing cultism inn tertiary institutions.
3. To determine parental influence on students involvement in cultism.

• RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The following research question was proposed to guide the study:

• . How does the prevalence of cultism affect students’ academic activities?

2. . To what extent does cultism affect student’s attitude to lecturer’s vis-à-vis academic performance?
3. . What are the solutions to the problems of cultism in tertiary institution?

• SIGNIFICANE OF THE STUDY

The importance of this study to students, lecturers, parent and the society at large cannot be over emphasized. The practical application of the research findings will help to reduce cultism in institutions of higher learning. Students will be guided by the study to see negative effects of cultism on their studies.
1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The primary objective of the research was to look into the effect of cultism on students’ academic performance in tertiary institution using Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic as a case study.

• LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

Due to the sensitive nature of the topic of this research work, many respondents may not be willing to disclose their candid opinions about cultism.

• ORGANIZATION OF THE STUDY

This study covered five chapters. Chapter one dealt with background of the study, statement of the problem, objective of the study, research questions, and significance of the study, scope of the study, limitation of the study, organization of the study and definition of terms.
Chapter two discussed the review of related literature on the subject matter by different authors and scholars.
Chapter three described the research design and methodology.
Chapter four focused on the data presentation analysis and interpretation while chapter five drew the summary of findings, conclusion and recommendation.

• DEFINITION OF TERMS

Cult: An extreme religious group that is not part of an established religion.
Effect: This refers to a change that somebody or something causes I somebody or something else.
Tertiary institution: Any formal school organization at the college, university or polytechnic level etc. for the particular interest of this study the components of tertiary institution is based on the Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua.
Academic: Connected with education, especially studying in schools and university.
Initiation: This is a rite of passage marking entrance or acceptance into a group or society.
Dues: It is an obligatory payment.
